New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, reflection, and looking ahead, but for many pets, it can be one of the most stressful nights of the year. Fireworks, loud gatherings, unfamiliar guests, and changes to routine can all be overwhelming for our furry family members.
The good news? A little preparation can go a long way in helping your pets feel safe, secure, and comfortable while you welcome the new year.
Create a Calm, Cozy Space
If your pet is sensitive to loud noises, set up a quiet retreat before the festivities begin. Choose an interior room away from windows and outside noise, and add familiar comforts like their bed, favorite blanket, or a well-loved toy. Soft music, white noise, or the TV can help muffle the sounds of fireworks and outside noises.
Stick to Routine Where You Can
Pets thrive on routine. Try to keep meals, walks, and potty breaks as close to their normal schedule as possible. Taking dogs out earlier in the evening, before fireworks start, can help reduce stress and minimize the chance of a startled dash.
Secure Doors, Gates, and Collars
With guests coming and going, it’s easy for doors or gates to be left open accidentally. Make sure all exits are secure and that your pet’s collar and ID tags are up to date. Microchipping adds an extra layer of protection in case the unexpected happens.
Be Mindful of Party Hazards
Holiday foods, alcohol, sparklers, and noisemakers can all pose risks to pets. Keep snacks and drinks out of reach, and gently remind guests not to share food or treats without checking first. Even well-meaning friends don’t always know what’s safe for pets.
Comfort Is Better Than “Toughing It Out”
If your pet seeks comfort during loud noises, it’s okay to reassure them. Calm affection, gentle words, or simply sitting nearby can help them feel more secure. Some pets also benefit from anxiety wraps or calming aids. Your veterinarian is a great resource for determining what is best for your pet.
