Respiratory infections, such as canine influenza or Bordetella (kennel cough), are common and cause outbreaks in shelters, kennels, and doggie daycare facilities. But a new illness has emerged that is more severe than these commonplace conditions, with a considerable portion of cases progressing to pneumonia. A number have been fatal.
Symptoms of this respiratory illness include:
- Persistent coughing
- Frequent sneezing
- Red, runny eyes
While numerous cases have resolved on their own, vigilance is paramount. Should your dog exhibit labored breathing or stop eating, seek veterinary care immediately.
Protect your pups by avoiding social settings like kennels, boarding facilities, and dog daycares. Additionally, make sure their vaccinations are up to date.
