There are tons of choices out there when it comes to cat litter – clumping, non-clumping, recycled paper, corn, silica gel crystals, walnut shells. The list goes on and on. The number of options (and advertisements!) can be overwhelming. We’re going to help you cut through the clutter. While every owner and cat is different, there are a few simple guidelines to consider.
1. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. If your cat is using the litterbox without incident, then don’t fall for fancy new types of litter. Your cat approves of the litter, litterbox and box placement. As all cats owners know, you NEVER do anything to interrupt your feline’s life. Not without prior approval from said cat.
2. Most cats prefer smaller litter particles. Cats began life as desert-dwelling animals, so small particles remind them of the soft sand their ancestors used. Plus, the tiny particles feel better on their paws. Keep your cat happy and avoid pellet or crystal-type litters.
3. Litterboxes aren’t meant to be aromatherapy. Cats like unscented litters. Their noses are very finely-tuned, so floral or citrus-scented litters can be irritating to them. Did you know a cat’s nose is more sensitive than some breeds of dogs?
4. Look for fast and hard clumping litter. This type of litter will help minimize messes and make it easier for you to scoop/clean, not to mention reducing the chances that urine-soaked clumps of litter will stick to your cat’s paws or tail.
5. Low dust is a must. This will keep your floors, furniture, and electronics free from litter dust, and keep your and your cat’s lungs clean. That is especially important if you, your cat, or anybody else in your home has asthma.
6. You can’t avoid the stink. Lots of cats are also averse to odor control additives. If you have to have a little with a commercially added odor control, cats prefer carbon to baking soda. Given the option of one or the other, cats prefer carbon to baking soda. Empty and wash your litterbox regularly to control the odor. This will also keep your cat from avoiding the litterbox due to lingering odors.
I hope this helps you find the best litter for you and your cat!
